Biking in Oakland
Since 1999, the City of Oakland, Public Works Agency has installed almost 93 miles of bicycle lanes and routes, including facilities on Grand Avenue, MacArthur, Mandela Parkway, 73rd Ave, Bancroft Ave, and the Embarcadero. The City is also improving bicycle access around Lake Merritt and along the waterfront. The Port of Oakland and the East Bay Regional Parks District also install bicycle lanes and paths within their jurisdictions.Bike Lane Campaigns

Cyclist Awareness- Ride carefully, especially in areas with that don't have an adequate bicycle network and dedicated lanes marked for cyclists. Even on streets with bike lanes, automobile drivers don't always look out for cyclists. Here's a great and somewhat funny video reminder about Cyclist Awareness.

Bicycle Master Plan - Victory! In December 2007, after lobbying by WOBO, the EBBC and several other organizations, the Oakland City Council passed the Oakland Bicycle Master Plan to encourage safety and accessibility for bicyclists throughout the City. The BMP is the citywide, long-range policy document for promoting bicycling as a viable means of transportation and recreation in Oakland. The Plan includes an existing conditions analysis, policies and action items, the Proposed Bikeway Network, design guidelines for bikeways and bicycle parking, and an implementation program. In particular, the plan, which updated the first BMP adopted in 1999, reflects a detailed analysis of the Proposed Bikeway Network. This analysis developed proposals for maximizing bicyclist safety and access throughout the city while minimizing potential adverse effects on other roadway users.
