Bike Broadway Campaign (Broadway Bike Corridor)
Coordinator: Alicia Parker
Campaign Goal: Install bike lanes on Broadway north of 40th Street and on the Webster/Franklin couplet to create a contiguous north-south bike route. Currently there is no safe, convenient, quick way for bicyclists to travel between Downtown and North Oakland.
Current Status: Momentum is building!
- Thanks to our superstar volunteers (Sarah Peters, John Gorman and Brian Warwick) canvassing business owners along the Broadway corridor, 75 businesses have endorsed a letter to City Council members indicating their support of the Bike Broadway Campaign.
- 190 individuals have signed a petition indicating their support of the campaign.
- Results of the recent bike-counting effort are being compiled. Twenty-three volunteers attended training and worked two- and three-hour shifts counting the number of bikes on Broadway during commute hours.
Harrison-Oakland Bike-Ped Campaign
Coordinator: Jennifer Jackson
Campaign Goal: To make the Harrison-Oakland corridor safer for school children, seniors, residents, and Whole Foods Market shoppers.
WOBO has been involved in seeking and attaining improvements in this neighborhood for over two years and continues to advocate for additional changes that will make the Harrison-Oakland corridor safer for pedestrians and bicyclists.
Current Status: WOBO is participating in a community transportation planning process funded by a CalTrans grant to the City of Oakland. The next community workshop is July 23rd, at the Westlake Middle School at 2629 Harrison St, where neighbors can weigh in on redesigning this busy stretch. Please save the date and join us!
Victories: WOBO's activism improved the Whole Foods project with the addition of more bike parking than originally planned, two signalized pedestrian crossings – one at Bay Place and one on Harrison at Westlake Middle School, a bulb-out pedestrian crossing at Vernon and Lee, and signs pointing motorists toward 27th St to access I-580, which has helped reduce speeding on Oakland Ave.

Ciclovía Campaign
Coordinator: Karen Hester
Campaign Goal: To formulate a Ciclovía (temporary street closure to cars to allow walking, biking and recreation) in Downtown Oakland.
Current Status:
The first two Oaklavia events will take place in 2010. More details.
Pedestrian Campaigns:
Pedestrian Scrambles: WOBO is working to get pedestrian scrambles with timed lights added along the Webster/Franklin corridor.
Placemaking: Placemaking is the community-driven transformation of public spaces to create a sense of connection between people, their environment and other people in their community. The idea is to turn 'spaces' into 'places'. Placemaking projects include: painting intersections (aka street paintings, intersection art), adding benches on streetcorners, and adding kiosks to sidewalks – so neighbors can post information about local events.

Bike Parking Campaign
Victory: When a Finance and Management Agency project replaced over 4,400 on-street parking meters with 'pay and display' parking kiosks last year, it dealt a blow to bike parking. Thankfully, parking has been re-added. The Transportation Services Division installed 361 new bike parking racks accommodating 776 bikes, most of them in Oakland's main commercial districts.
Did they miss a spot? The City has a small quantity of additional racks in stock to address ongoing requests. Please submit your location suggestions to bikeped (at) oaklandnet.com or complete their Online Bike Rack Request Form.
