It's time to connect North Oakland to Downtown!

There is no safe, convenient, quick way for bicyclists to get downtown to/from North Oakland. Let's get some bike lanes on Broadway, Franklin and Webster Streets.

Area History:
  • Many of the intersections along the Broadway corridor are extremely accident prone. See this map of auto collisions involving bicyclists and pedestrians from 2002-2007.

  • Broadway / 27th St was the third most bike-car accident prone intersection in Oakland from 2000-2004.

  • The Broadway/Valdez District Specific Plan development process, which is now underway, may impact the cooridors walkability and bikeability. WOBO encourages citizens to keep up to date on the current status of this work and attend the public meetings. We've updated our calendar with the most updated public meetings schedule.

  • Campaign Goal:
Install bike lanes on Broadway from 27th Street to HWY 24 and from 14th via Webster and Franklin to create a continuous north south bike route almost FIVE miles long! See the interactive map below.

    Progress to Date:
  • Over 80 small business owners along the Broadway/ Franklin/ Webster corridor have endorsed letters of support for the campaign

  • Close to 200 Oakland residents have signed a petition of support for the campaign

  • In May of 2009, WOBO volunteers counted bicyclists along the Broadway corridor – click here to read the Broadway Bike Counting Analysis

  • Major Campaign Milestones:
  • April 2010 – Franklin/ Webster bike lane design complete (City Dept. of TSD)

  • Fall 2010 – Resolution to City Council appropriating funds for re-configuring the lanes and installing bike lanes on the Franklin/ Webster couplet

  • Spring 2011 – Bike lanes installed on the Franklin / Webster couplet

  • Championing Projects in the City of Oakland Bicycle Master Plan:
A crucial link between project planning and project implementation is community support. WOBO volunteer activists can play a critical role in assuring that decison-makers know how strongly the entire community supports bicycle improvements by signing petitions and attending City Council meetings where bicycle projects get prioritized. Especially during an econcomic recession, vigilant attention to keeping bicycle improvements a top priority in the City is essential. By ensuring broad community support, WOBO can help leverage the City’s previous investments.

    Campaign Overview:
  • All projects needed to complete the Broadway bike corridor are included in the Bicycle Master Plan that the City Council passed in December, 2007.

  • The City has already done the 'heavy lifting' and completed a Environmental Impact Report, which includes a feasibility study (page 175) for this project.

  • It's time to put some paint on the pavement!

  • Take Action:Let's push the Public Works Committee and the Councilmembers whose districts this project goes through to get this project done. Click on the links below to send an email to the City Council:
  • Councilmember Jane Brunner (District 1), project is in her district.
  • Councilmember Patricia Kernighan (District 2), Public Works Committee, project is in her district.
  • Councilmember Nancy Nadel (District 3), Public Works Committee Chair, project is in her district.
  • Councilmember Desley Brooks (District 6), Public Works Committee
  • Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan (At Large), Public Works Committee

  • Broadway - It's broad enough for all of us!
