Walk Oakland Bike Oakland's mission is to improve neighborhood quality of life by making walking and biking in Oakland safe, easy, accessible and fun.

Thanks for Helping Us Make Oaklavía a Huge Success!

The inaugural Oaklavía was a tremendous success, and we'd like to thank everyone who came out to enjoy the car-free streets! If you want to re-live some of the magic or check out the buzz from the event, you'll find media coverage (including some photos from the event) at the Oaklavía media page.

Introducing: Kassie Rohrbach, WOBO's Executive Director

Walk Oakland Bike Oakland is delighted to introduce our very first Executive Director, Kassie Rohrbach. Kassie was one of the co-founders of Energy Action Coalition, a youth-led coalition of environmental and social justice groups. She helped grow EAC into a robust and effective organization for change. Kassie brings 8 years of coalition-building, policy development, and organizational development to WOBO. We know that she's going to be a great leader--she already has ideas about how to expand and deepen WOBO's relationships with partner groups and with members, and she's eager to hear from you about how you want to help WOBO grow.

Thanks to all who helped support our efforts to bring us to this next big step. Please come to our January 28 meeting to welcome Kassie and share your ideas for making the 2010s WOBO's decade.

Request a Bike Rack!

Did you know that the City of Oakland always has an ear out for suggestions on where to install bike racks? It's true. Here's your chance to ask for a bike rack in a much-needed spot!

Submit your bike rack location requests to the City using their online form. Note that racks can only be installed on a City-owned right-of-way (mostly sidewalks) in commercial districts and cannot be installed in AC Transit red zones, too close to light poles and other obstructions, etc. Check out the City's rack placement guidelines (.pdf) here. Questions? Contact the City's Bicycle & Pedestrian Facilities Coordinator at (510) 238-3983 or email bikeped@oaklandnet.com.

Victory! New Bike Parking Racks in Oakland

When a Finance and Management Agency project replaced over 4,400 on-street parking meters with 'pay and display' parking kiosks last year, this dealt a blow to bike parking.

Thankfully, some bike parking has now been re-added. The Transportation Services Division installed 361 new bike parking racks accommodating 776 bikes, most of them in Oakland's main commercial districts. Racks were installed in the Dimond, Fruitvale/International, Rockridge, Piedmont Ave, Grand Lake, Old Oakland, Montclair, Pill Hill/Central, Chinatown, Uptown, and Downtown areas of Oakland.

Did they miss a spot? Please submit your location suggestions to bikeped (at) oaklandnet.com or complete their Online Bike Rack Request Form.

These two photos are a 'before' and 'after': the headless meter with an 'x' on the sidewalk (marking where the new rack was to be installed) and the new rack installed and in use.

Victory! City Funds Bicycle/Pedestrian Engineering Position

WOBO secures boost to bike & pedestrian city staff
On Monday November 3, City Council voted to add a dedicated staff engineer to the bicycle and pedestrian unit. Sounds modest, and it is. But without this addition, countless bike projects would be missed without the proper design complete. The position should be filled early in 2009, with the benefits coming in the months after.
WOBO has been working on this issue for over two years, and securing $100,000 annually to fund this position is a big boost to the city's capacity to implement the bicycle and pedestrian plans!

Victory! New Stoplight on Harrison by Westlake Middle School

image
WOBO members have been active working with the City to make 27th St. and Harrison safer for school children, seniors, residents, and shoppers at the new Whole Foods. WOBO thanks Councilmember Nadel for committing funds to install a new stoplight on Harrison between Whole Foods and the Westlake Middle School. Along with the Westlake Community Coalition, the HarriOak Neighborhood, St. Pauls Tower residents and Westlake Middle School parents and First Congregational Church, WOBO is seeking additional improvements to reduce speeding and improve safety in the area.
WOBO thanks all who joined us in recognizing Councilmember Nancy Nadel at the Traffic Light Celebration on April 28th, 2008.
